Seasonal Public Service Announcement
As we welcome spring and enjoy the wonderful warm temperatures we are reminded that our pets will be confronting those nuisance pests that com
e along with the warm weather…fleas, ticks and mosquitos. The warmer than usual winter means that fewer of these critters have gone completely dormant and certainly many experts expect higher numbers of these pests this year. Besides just being downright annoying these are the bugs that transmit other diseases like heartworms, tapeworms, and Lymes disease.
Other intestinal parasite eggs also readily survive in these warmer temperatures so potential exposure to roundworms, hookworms and whipworms is always a concern. Remember, keeping your pet healthy ultimately means keeping your family healthy. Some of these parasites and their associated diseases can be transmissible to humans.
We always recommend that you discuss your pets’ individual health needs with your veter
inarian. This should include a discussion about appropriate year round heartworm and flea/tick preventive medications. There are many on the market and the choices can be confusing. Discussions with your veterinarian will help you to choose the perfect product for your pets. Great information about parasites and your pet’s health can also be found at the Companion Animal Parasite Council website www.capcvet.org.
